"SUNHAK Peace Prize Established, Committee officially initiated"
Largest prize money in Korea : $1 million USD
Award Committee headed by former KoreaUniversity President Il-Sik Hong
The official inauguration of the SUNHAKPeace Prize was held on the 19th floor press room of the Korean Press Center at11am on August 11th, with about 170 people in attendance from members of theSUNHAK Peace Prize Committee and distinguished leaders from Korea and overseasrepresenting various fields.
Starting from August 2015, the committeewill award the SUNHAK Peace Prize annually to an individual or organization who made asubstantial contribution to the realization of a peaceful world and the welfareof humankind. The laureate will be awarded with $1 million US dollars (approximately 1billion Korean won), the largest of any prize money awarded in Korea.
The Chairman of the award committee is Dr. Il-Sik Hong, former President of Korea University, and the committee iscurrently made up of twelve prominent international and Korean leaders coveringa wide range of fields, including former UN Secretary General Dr. Boutros Boutros-Ghali,Washington Times CEO Mr. Larry Beasley, former Japanese Minister of State forDefense Hon. Ohno Yoshinori , Chief monk of Bulguk Temple of the Jogye Order the VenerableSeong-Ta, and President of the Korean Council on Foreign Relations Dr. Tae-Ik Chung.These prominent leaders have been invited to join the committee in order tohelp ensure that the evaluation of prize nominees are conducted objectivelyand transparently.

In his address, Committee Charman Il-SikHong stressed that "the intent of the SUNHAK Peace Prize does not end withthe awarding of the prize, but in playing a role as a driving force forspreading peace through culture and providing ongoing support for peaceactivities."
Following this, in his congratulatoryaddress, Chairman of the Seoul Peace Prize Cultural Foundation Dr. Cheol-Sung Lee, expressedhis hope that "the SUNHAK Peace Prize, proposed by Mrs. Hak Ja HanMoon,who has taken on the work of her late husband, the Rev. Sun Myung Moon,who devoted his life to working for peace transcending race, religion, culture andnational differences, will serve as a motivating force to continue the spiritof peace of the founders," continuing, "I think that today we arewitnessing the start of a new worldwide peace initiative."
Committee Secretary General Man Ho Kimintroduced the SUNHAK Peace Prize and explained about its fair and impartialevaluation system, which will add to the prestige of the prize. Nominations arescheduled to be collected from about 1,000 nominators in 80 countries aroundthe world until the end of October this year, and after confirming theeligibility of the nominees and conducting objective evaluation, the winner ofthe first prize is scheduled to be chosen by April 2015. Their work will notend when the award is given out, as ongoing support will be provided for thelaureates’ peace activities, promoting and expanding their work in hopes of increasingits value. Future plans on a variety of programs, include symposiums andfestivals.
As an international peace prize like theSeoul Peace Prize, the SUNHAK Peace Prize will reach beyond the borders ofKorea to convey a message of world peace.
