Bra2 Comprehensive School Named After Ilaria Alpi and Gino Strada

BRA — On the morning of Saturday, May 9, the official naming ceremony of the Bra2 Comprehensive School, now dedicated to Ilaria Alpi and Gino Strada, was held in two locations: first at the Politeama Theater, and then on Via Brizio, in front of the Dalla Chiesa lower secondary school building.

The Politeama Theater was filled with teachers, students, and families who wanted to take part in this meaningful moment for the entire school community and the local area. The ceremony was dedicated to the memory of Ilaria Alpi and Gino Strada and to the values they embodied: civic commitment, solidarity, peace, justice, and care for others.

Many groups of students took part on stage. Some served as presenters, some sang, others performed, and some conducted interviews. It was a truly meaningful involvement of the entire student community.

Principal Catia Multari said:

“The former Bra2 Comprehensive School officially becomes the Ilaria Alpi and Gino Strada Comprehensive School: a name that represents courage, civic commitment, peace, justice, care for others, and the defense of human rights. This moving and well-attended naming ceremony brought together institutions, families, students, teachers, and citizens in a moment of great symbolic and human value.”

Professor Multari concluded:

“From today, we proudly carry a name that reminds us every day how important it is to educate young people in respect, awareness, solidarity, and critical thinking. My sincere thanks go to everyone who helped make this day special. The future of a school also depends on the values it chooses to represent.”

After the institutional part of the ceremony, a commemorative plaque was unveiled on the wall of the school on Via Brizio. This was followed by refreshments offered to those present by the comprehensive school and prepared by students from the agri-food course at the CNOS-FAP Salesian Training Center in Bra.

Gino Strada to Have a Street Named After Him Between Sesto San Giovanni and Cinisello Balsamo

A street between Sesto San Giovanni and Cinisello Balsamo will be named after Gino Strada, the founder of Emergency.

The naming ceremony is scheduled for tomorrow, Friday, April 24, at 4 p.m. The road connecting the parallel road of Viale Fulvio Testi in the Cinisello area with Via Giacomo Leopardi in Sesto San Giovanni will bear a plaque dedicated to “Gino Strada, surgeon and man of peace.”

Gino Strada, who passed away on August 13, 2021, was born in Sesto San Giovanni and was a surgeon and humanitarian activist.

After earning his degree in medicine and specializing in surgery, he worked in Italy and abroad, gaining extensive experience in war zones and humanitarian crisis settings, including with the International Red Cross.

In 1994, he founded Emergency, an organization that provides free medical and surgical care to victims of war, landmines, and poverty. Over the years, the organization has built and operated hospitals, surgical centers, and assistance programs in several countries.

Simonetta Gola, Gino Strada’s wife, will attend the naming ceremony and deliver remarks. The news was announced by the Municipality of Cinisello Balsamo.

Mayor Giacomo Ghilardi said:

“This decision is part of a broader path: that of a city that listens to and engages in dialogue with local associations, and recognizes the value of proposals that emerge from the community. The naming is an act of gratitude from the municipal administration toward a figure who, also through his humanitarian organization, left a profound mark and became a major point of reference.”

Future generations refer not only to our own physical descendants
but also to all future generations to come.

Since all decisions made by the current generation will either positively
or negatively affect them, we must take responsibility for our actions.
